The Trinity Classical Academy Knights girls basketball team’s first venture into the postseason was a building block.

The Knights lost 55-29 to Arrowhead Christian on Thursday at Santa Clarita Christian’s gymnasium in Canyon Country in the first round of the CIF-Southern Section Division VA playoffs.

But the team has come a long way in its first varsity season.

“Two and a half months ago, it wasn’t even on our radar,” said Trinity head coach Dawn Hammer of the playoffs. “How do you take girls who didn’t know a single thing about basketball, athletes from other sports, for them not only to gain enough fundamentals to finish second in league and beat girls who have been playing for years and go into the playoffs and not have it a runway victory for the other team? We reflected on how much character it takes.”

Taylor Oshiro led Trinity with 20 points and she added seven rebounds.

Emily Buchanan added 11 rebounds and four blocks.

Trinity led 9-7 after one quarter, but Arrowhead’s press turned the game into a 19-13 advantage for the visitors.

Arrowhead outscored Trinity 24-10 in the third quarter.

Trinity finished the season at 10-10 overall and finished second in the Heritage League.

Jacey Massetto is the team’s lone senior.

Of the eight other girls on the team, five are freshmen.
