The Santa Clarita Christian School boys basketball team celebrates after winning the Heritage League title on Thursday at SCCS.

The best team that not enough people know about in the Santa Clarita Valley just went and won a Heritage League championship.

The Santa Clarita Christian boys basketball team defeated Faith Baptist 61-44 on Thursday at SCCS to claim its first Heritage title since 2002.

“For me, it’s very gratifying because the kids worked so hard,” said SCCS head coach James Mosley. “I knew we had good talent. Still, we had to bring it together and play the games.”

The Cardinals beefed up their schedule this season, even taking a large step up by playing in Canyon’s annual December tournament, and tested its talent.

SCCS (17-5 overall, 5-1 Heritage League) responded time and again and did so on Thursday as well.

SCCS led 20-12 after a quarter, but allowed Faith Baptist (10-10, 2-4) to go on a 10-2 run in the second quarter.

By halftime, SCCS led 33-28.

The Cardinals eased up on its press a tad in the second half and focused on stopping the Contenders’ dribble penetration.

Faith scored just 16 points in the second half.

Kamron Carroll scored 14 points and had seven assists for the Cardinals.

Masyn Parker also scored 14 points

Jacob Moss added 13 points, Alik Airapetyan scored 10 points with four steals and Phillip Webb pulled down 12 rebounds.

SCCS, the No. 4 team in CIF-Southern Section Division VA, will find out its playoff matchup when brackets are released on Sunday.

“We feel like we’ve got a shot,” Mosley said.
