“Back when I was in grade school, all we had was chalk boards,” joked Canyon Springs Elementary School’s “Principal for a Day” Friday as she toured “her” school’s classrooms.

“And the closest thing we had to technology was an overhead projector we had in high school.”

Canyon Springs’ Principal for a Day was no octogenarian. She was Jessica Shaw, an education consultant for IVS Computer Technology, headquartered in Bakersfield.

And she was no stranger to Canyon Springs Elementary, either. IVS did a technology makeover at Canyon Springs, and Shaw was the professional development trainer for teachers, helping them integrate technology into their curriculum.

“There’s no way we could be where we are without her,” said Jennifer Gutierrez, Canyon Springs’ principal for all the rest of the school days, as she led Shaw on the tour. “Our teachers love her. She is an amazing instructor and a great asset to our school.”

Visiting the classrooms, seeing the fruits of her labor pay off with student engagement, Shaw actually had tears in her eyes at one point.

“It’s really rewarding to see how technology is impacting their learning,” she said. “It validates our training and how effective it is.”

Other duties performed Friday by Shaw included leading students in the Pledge of Allegiance during a morning assembly.

Principal for a Day is a fundraising event sponsored by the SCV Education Foundation to raise money for the foundation’s programs.

Businesses, community leaders and even some parents pony up funds to become Principals for a Day for the morning. During the afternoon they are treated to a luncheon.

“Principal for a Day gives the community an opportunity to be more aware of what’s going on in the schools,” said Kathy Harris, assistant superintendent of instructional services for the Sulphur Springs School District, which includes Canyon Springs.

This year’s event, the 22nd annual Principal for a Day, was sponsored by Lundgren Management Corporation, JSB Development, California Credit Union, School First Federal Credit Union, Colombo Construction Company, the Schutz Family and Newhall Land Development Inc.
