LOS ANGELES (AP) — A new federal civil rights indictment alleges that two Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies beat a handcuffed prisoner at the Men's Central Jail.

The four-count indictment returned by a grand jury late Thursday follows earlier indictments of 18 current and former Los Angeles County deputies on corruption and civil rights offenses.

The indictment alleges that in 2009 the two deputies, 26-year-old Joey Aguiar and 38-year-old Mariano Ramirez, illegally used force on a prisoner who was handcuffed and secured with a waist chain.

The deputies allegedly punched and kicked the inmate, used pepper spray on him, struck him with a flashlight and then wrote false reports to cover up the illegal use of force.

Both deputies are scheduled for arraignment March 6.
