The Signal celebrates 95 years

Today is The Signal’s 95th birthday, making us one of the oldest businesses in the Santa Clarita Valley.

We would like to seize the moment to reflect on The Signal’s role in the community these many years and to say thank you to those who have helped make it possible to be the most consistent source of information for our valley for nearly 100 years.

This is a time of radical change in the way many industries do business, and certainly that’s true for the news media the past few decades. We believe our long history serving this valley has helped us thrive through these changes.

We are an information provider, and no matter how that information is delivered — whether by a newspaper thrown on a driveway or through the wonders of the Internet — providing credible, consistent information has always been the main element of our business model. That will never change.

The Signal is adapting to technological changes and, in fact, has been a leader in this arena for a newspaper of our size.

Our operations are now known as Signal Multimedia. We have an active and dynamic website that provides our readers with up-to-date information around the clock and our advertisers a greater buy for their dollars.

We are constantly thinking digitally but we also recognize the importance of our print products, including the newspaper and the many other monthly, bi-monthly and special publications, in the market.

We understand how our readers look forward to these and get valuable information from them. We promise not to forget that.

The existence of both print and digital products provides more for our readers.

It’s our readers, especially our loyal subscribers of many years, we want to recognize today as The Signal turns 95.

We regularly hear from readers who preface their comments with “I’ve been a subscriber for 22 years and ...” or

“I’ve been taking your paper for 37 years and. ...”

Whether they’re calling with a complaint or a compliment or a story tip, we say first “Thank you” to those who for years, even decades, have been engaged enough in this community to faithfully stay informed about its issues through subscriptions — and in the process support our business and the businesses that advertise with us.

We say also “Thank you” to those advertisers. Many readers do not understand, but we certainly do, that advertising dollars are what keeps a newspaper alive.

We know for many years you, our advertisers, had nowhere else local to advertise, but now with the explosion of media you have many choices. That you choose the local newspaper may reflect your longtime support for the community or an understanding that newspapers are the best medium for delivering the customer who’s ready to buy — or both. Either way, we thank you for your support.

We still have the largest-staffed newsroom in the Santa Clarita Valley bringing you information about city and county actions and activities, local schools and other local news you can find nowhere else.

We were there with you during the Buckweed Fire, the 1971 and 1994 earthquakes, the failed efforts to create a new county and the successful efforts to create the city of Santa Clarita.

We feature your children’s elementary school activities, cover their high school football games, tell you about their college prospects and cover their high school graduations.

Our dedication to local coverage has been accentuated in recent months by the creation of the Sunday “Our Community” section, which allows extensive reader contributions about whatever readers find important to them.

Thank you so much for your support. The Santa Clarita Valley is a wonderful community and it has been an honor to be a part of it for nearly a century.
