A motorcyclist who suffered serious injuries following a traffic collision on Interstate 5 this morning was reported in stable condition at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital, a hospital spokeswoman said before noon.

Shawn P. Knight, 58, of Rancho Cucamonga was listed in stable condition by hospital staff, Katreena Salgado said around 11 a.m.

Knight was injured in a chain-reaction crash involving two cars and his bike, according to a news release issued by California Highway Officer John Lutz.

He was rushed by ambulance to the hospital about 6 a.m.

The crash occurred about 5:40 a.m. today. The driver of a 2005 Dodge Avenger was traveling north on I-5 in the lane next to the carpool lane just south of Highway 14, according to Lutz. Traffic was moving approximately 30 miles per hour.

The driver of a 2013 Nissan Rogue, described as a 62-yer-old Simi Valley man, was stopped in traffic in the same lane ahead of the Dodge.

Knight was traveling northbound in the carpool lane on his motorcycle, approaching both the Dodge and the Nissan, the CHP reported.

For unknown reasons, the Dodge driver was unable to stop his car in time to avoid the halted traffic in front of him, a CHP report said. His vehicle collided with the rear of the Nissan just south of Highway 14.

Immediately after the impact, the driver of the Dodge tried to maneuver his vehicle into the center median, crossing directly into Knight’s path.

The Dodge struck Knight’s 1999 BMW motorcycle, “forcing the motorcycle and rider into the raised concrete barrier. The motorcycle and rider were vaulted over the barrier and into the center median,” the CHP said.

“It’s a major injury collision,” Lutz told The Signal shortly after the crash. Lanes were shut down for an investigation, but by 8 a.m. all had been reopened.

The driver of the Dodge was identified by the CHP as 25-year-old Samuel M. Sabedra of Sylmar. A CHP investigation was continuing.
