Square Dancing in the Santa Clarita Valley

Wikipedia says, “A square dance is a dance for four couples (eight dancers) arranged in a square, with one couple on each side, facing the middle of the square.”

The dance came to America with early European settlers and is now practiced all over the world.

If you’re single, or a couple, looking for a little fun and interested in making new friends, then this may be just the thing to try here in the Santa Clarita Valley.

No special dress attire is required, and you can wear casual, comfortable clothes and shoes. I’m a little prejudiced about square dancing, as my wife and I have made a lot of new friends since we started square dancing a year and a half ago.

The members of the Sierra Hillbillies square dance club are very helpful, friendly and willing to answer any questions that are asked. The Sierra Hillbillies provide a beginners class on Tuesdays from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Valencia

Meadows Park through Santa Clarita Parks and Recreation, for which you can register at www.santa-clarita.com/seasons.

The club also hosts a monthly dance the first Sunday of every month at the Senior Center in Newhall. Round dancing starts at 2 p.m., and then square dancing starts at 2:30 p.m.

People are welcome to come and watch the dances. Some people dress in what would be traditional square-dance attire; however, you can still come to this dance in casual attire.

For more information you can visit www.sierrahillbillies.org.
