SANTA CLARITA - Friends and fans of local motorcycle racer Tommy Aquino are mourning him on Facebook today after the young competitor was killed in a crash in Piru Sunday.

The 21-year-old graduate of Saugus High School died in a crash at the Piru Motorcross Park on Center Street in Piru.

About 12:30 p.m. Sunday, paramedics of Fire Station 28 in Piru responded to reports of a traffic collision at the park, station Capt. Rob Davidson said Monday.

“We did respond to assist the (California) Highway Patrol,” Davidson said, referring to CHP officers at the Moorpark station.

Aquino’s Facebook page lists among his accomplishments: 2008 AMA Rookie of the Year, multiple podium finishes and a “hard fought Daytona Sportbike race win in New Jersey.”

Aquino, born and raised in Santa Clarita, was also highlighted on the website as a “front runner at 2012 Daytona 200.”
