Who needs the Super Bowl?

Some local residents find different enjoyments on the sacred Sunday

For one local couple, Super Bowl Sunday meant having a whole movie theatre to themselves.

While many taverns and restaurants in the Santa Clarita Valley welcomed patrons spending their Super Bowl Sunday at their business, there were others like Bill Guthrie and Tracy Bagatelle who considered Sunday “super” because it simply meant fewer people and no crowds.

“We don’t who’s playing,” Guthrie said. “Is it the Chicago Blackhawks?”

The two chose Super Bowl Sunday to go see “The Wolf of Wall Street” at Edwards Cinema Santa Clarita near the Westfield Valencia Town Center mall.

“It figured into our discussion,” Guthrie said reflecting on their decision to see a movie Sunday.

“The only other place people are talking about going was Disneyland because everybody else would be at home watching the Super Bowl.”

They were right.

Theatre manager Megan Anderson said of Sunday’s movie attendance: “It’s very, very minimal.”

Bagatelle added: “I was thinking of watching the Kitten Bowl on TV.”

The three-hour Kitten Bowl is a TV show that aired Sunday, followed by repeat showings on what the channel is labeling “Su-Purr Bowl Sunday” for those uninterested in the real Super Bowl on Fox.

Super Bowl XLVIII proved a lopsided match-up of the Seattle Seahawks and Denver Broncos.

The Hallmark Channel’s Kitten Bowl, or the Puppy Bowl shown on Animal Planet or even the Fish Bowl — counter-programming of the NFL’s Denver-Seattle contest on Nat Geo Wild — are all options available to TV viewers uninterested with football’s biggest game.

The “Fish Bowl” stars a goldfish in a bowl swimming around for four hours.

As boring as the fish option sounds, some local NFL fans who paid money for a special Super Bowl party described Sunday’s Super Bowl game almost as interesting as watching a fish in a bowl.

“It’s boring,” said a patron at the Wolf Creek Restaurant & Brewing Company who gave her name only as Kristin.
She and about 50 NFL fans crowded around a flat screen TV at the Valencia restaurant but made little sound watching it.

“I was rooting for the underdog and I thought the underdog was Seattle,” said Kristin’s friend Audrey, and effort to explain the subdued atmosphere.

Wolf Creek server Alexa Southworth explained the quiet crowd as Charger fans who wanted to see the Denver Broncos put up more of a tough fight.

Over at the mall itself, shoppers enjoyed the same unhurried experience as discerning movie patrons.

“The women are good for me,” said Ben, who manned the Dead Sea Skin Care kiosk, referring to customer traffic to his business.

“The kickoff isn’t until 3:30 p.m. right?” he said. “So most people are already cooking and preparing for their house party. I expect a drop in (customer) traffic after the kickoff.”

When the kickoff did happen, some TV viewers expressed more emotion for many of the TV commercials unveiled for the first time.

“There were too many serious commercials,” said Valencia resident Steve Taylor who attended a Super Bowl party in Northpark.

“I liked the commercial of the guy who didn’t know he was in a commercial,” he said.

Party hostess Lisa Palmer said the best commercial was the one featuring a topless David Beckham.
