The Master's College men's basketball team is struggling in GSAC play after a strong start to the season.

Last week, The Master’s College saw its men’s and women’s basketball fall to Westmont College on the road only to rebound with victories over San Diego Christian in El Cajon.  Baseball continued its strong start by winning its series against Simpson University and San Diego Christian.

Baseball:

On Monday, 17th-year head coach Monte Brooks hit a career milestone by earning his 500th win in a doubleheader sweep over Simpson University.

Brooks’ overall record at TMC currently sits at 502-368.

In the doubleheader, the Mustangs took down the Red Hawks 16-1 and 7-2 on Reese Field.

Later in the week, the Mustangs traveled to El Cajon to take on GSAC rival San Diego Christian.

As has become the early trend in 2014, Jason Karkenny, John Popadics, and Sam Robison paced the Mustangs’ with two hits apiece in the final game of the road series.  Currently, the trio is hitting .463, .417, and .405, respectively, through the season’s first 11 games.

The Mustangs will return to action on Tuesday when they play at Claremont in a non-conference matchup before resuming GSAC play at Concordia next weekend.

Women’s Basketball:

After two halves of hard-fought basketball, The Master’s College women’s basketball team faced its first GSAC loss of the season Tuesday night in Santa Barbara.

But on Saturday, the Lady Mustangs got back to their winning ways by beating San Diego Christian (10-8, 1-4 GSAC) 75-43 in El Cajon.

With the win, the ninth-ranked Lady Mustangs’ 2013-14 season record improves to 17-4 and 5-1 in GSAC play.

At the end of the night, Jacquelyn Marshall posted a double-double by scoring 21 points and yanking 10 boards. Marshall also put up a game-high 4 blocks and 3 steals. Zoe Scott scored 11 points while Megan Lindsley posted 10 more.

Factoring into an overall team effort, TMC’s bench posted 27 points.

Now, the Lady Mustangs look to Tuesday where they will have the daunting task of taking down Vanguard, the NAIA’s first-ranked team. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. at Bross Court in The MacArthur Center.

Men’s Basketball:

The Master’s College men’s basketball team’s 2013-14 record dropped to 13-7 (1-4 GSAC) after falling to Westmont College 50-58 Tuesday night in Santa Barbara.

However, on Saturday, the Mustangs snapped their three-game losing streak with a 77-67 victory over GSAC opponent San Diego Christian. With the win, TMC raised its 2013-14 record to 14-7 and 2-4 in conference play.

At the end of the night, Derrick Fain led all scorers with 20 points, Bernard Ireland posted 13, and Zach Stalin claimed 11.  Stalin also led TMC in rebounds by yanking down 7 boards.  As a team, TMC went 29-61 (47%) from the field, 8-16 (50%) behind the arc, and 11-13 (84%) from the free throw line.  Staying true to being a team victory, the Mustangs’ bench chipped in 17 points.

Now, the Mustangs look to earn their third GSAC victory by taking down Vanguard, the NAIA’s 12th-ranked team, on Tuesday. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Bross Court in The MacArthur Center.
