Shawn Kolani scored 30 points as the suddenly red-hot College of the Canyons women’s basketball team breached the century mark for the first time this season in a blowout victory.

The COC Cougars beat the Pierce College Brahmas 103-87 on Saturday at Pierce College, marking the first time this season COC has scored more than 100 points.

“It’s like the old school Lady Cougars used to do all the time,” said COC head coach Greg Herrick, whose teams have long been known for their gaudy offensive numbers.

Saturday’s win is the third in four games for the Cougars (10-12 overall, 4-3 Western State Conference North Division).

It’s a promising stretch of wins for a COC team that struggled early in the season and won just one of seven games in the month of December.

“We have not been able to meet our expectations as a program, but we’re starting to get better,” Herrick said.

COC has made it to the postseason in each of the past 20 seasons, but given its third-place standing in conference, that streak is somewhat in danger.

The good news for the Cougars is the emergence of their two leading scorers, Kolani and Keke Mathews, who added 25 points and 11 rebounds on Saturday.

In addition to her game-high 30 points, Kolani added nine assists.

Nayiri Aslanian tacked on six points and six boards for the Cougars.

Both teams maintained an up-tempo pace while trying to push the ball up the court quickly.

That played into COC’s hand considering it had 14 players suited up compared to eight for Pierce (14-10, 2-5).

“We were able to keep fresh players in and keep the pace up and I think over time they kind of ran out of energy and had trouble keeping up,” Herrick said.
