Canyon Cowboys boys basketball made sure there was no way Golden Valley would pull a repeat of what it did Tuesday.

So the Cowboys took care of business early in a 76-48 win over the Grizzlies Friday at Canyon High School.

Canyon outscored Golden Valley 26-14 in the second quarter to build a 41-21 halftime lead.

From there, the Cowboys (20-3 overall, 4-2 Foothill League) didn’t relent.

“We knew they came out really confident,” said Canyon head coach Sean DeLong. “It’s been such a struggle for them. I can only imagine the heartache they’ve been through. They came out confident and played hard. It was one of our better games of the year for us. We hung with it, battled and put it on.”

Golden Valley (8-12, 1-5) ended its 34-game Foothill League losing streak on Tuesday with a 41-38 win against Saugus. It was a game in which the Grizzlies erased an 11-point, fourth-quarter deficit.

Ben Taufahema led Canyon with 20 points, with four 3-pointers and nine rebounds.

Marc Cabrera had 17 points and seven assists.

Dean Hendrix-Davis scored 17 points and had eight rebounds and Mark Bell added 10 points. Luke Edwards had nine points.

Golden Valley was led by Noah Heinzman with 18 points and Jordan Watkins with 10.
