A man who smashed the window of a car parked in a Valencia shopping center and stole a purse has been sentenced to 32 months in state prison, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office said.

Sherman Cox, 24, of Newhall, appeared in San Fernando Superior Court Wednesday and was sentenced to 32 months, said Ricardo Santiago.

In September, Cox pleaded no contest to one count of receiving known stolen property for an incident that happened in the summer.

On June 3, Deputies with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s station responded to reports of burglar who smashed the window of a car, Deputy Josh Dubin said at the time.

Deputies tracked the suspect through the paseos east of the Granary Square shopping center and were able to make an arrest with the help of a person who witnessed the crime, he said.

Within 15 minutes of the smash-and-grab incident, deputies arrested Cox at gunpoint on the South Fork Trail.

They recovered $634 and credit cards, Dubin said at the time of the arrest.
