It took the Golden Valley Grizzlies girls basketball team 15 tries and eight seasons, but they finally beat the Saugus Centurions.

This one was never really in doubt either.

Golden Valley defeated Saugus 56-37 on Tuesday at Saugus High to earn their long-awaited fist Foothill League win of the year and first-ever win over their league rival.

“We talked about getting over the hump going into the second half of league play,” said Golden Valley head coach Kerri Garland.

Especially after Golden Valley (12-8 overall, 1-4 Foothill League) knows it gave some games away in the first half of league play.

The Grizzlies held a double-digit lead against Hart on Jan. 21 before losing 69-68 in overtime.

On Friday, the Grizzlies lost by 12 to a West Ranch team they felt they should beat.

They didn’t do anything particularly dominant against Saugus, but beat them in every quarter.

“Today everyone participated. It wasn’t one person,” said Grizzlies guard Mariah Madison, who scored 17 points in the game.

But Madison, Cherokee Cardriche (12 points) and Caitlyn Zindroski (12 points) carried the scoring load.

Saugus was timid about going inside the post with Cardriche on patrol.

The Centurions (9-12, 0-5) got 17 points from Justice Bennett, but only six of those points came in the second half.

“It’s tough to win a game when you don’t put the ball in the basket,” said Saugus head coach Kent Eaton. “We still don’t have the rhythm.”

And Saugus never established an offensive rhythm in the game.

Golden Valley led 17-8 after a quarter, 32-17 at halftime and 44-27 going into the fourth.

“This isn’t the end of Golden Valley,” Madison said. “There’s more.”
