Any day now, parishioners of Our Lady of Perpetual Help are expected to learn who will replace Pastor Richard Martini who was transferred to Carpinteria in November, a church staffer said.

Martini, one of The Signal’s Top 51 Most Influential people of Santa Clarita the last two years, was transferred by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles from the local Roman Catholic Church on Lyons Avenue to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Carpinteria.

“He was reassigned to the parish in Carpinteria where a pastor there is very very sick,” said the staffer who asked not to be identified.

“We’re waiting for a new pastor to be named any day now,” she said.

Rev. David Velazquez, who is currently ill, is the Carpinteria church’s “pastor emeritus” with Martini taking the helm as its pastor, according to the Jan. 14, 2014, newsletter published by St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Martini became pastor at Our Lady of Perpetual Help on Lyons near Orchard Village in 2010.

Over the last three years, he saw significant changes unfold at the church principally the newly renovated pastoral center seen as the first step in the grand plan to restore and expand one of Santa Clarita’s oldest churches.

During his time at the local church, Martini has overseen its annual barbecue which raised more than $2 million for the expansion project.

Among his many accolades, Martini received the Papal Honor of being named Chaplain to His Holiness in 2010.

Phone messages left for Martini with the receptionist at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and e-mails sent directly to him were not answered as of 5 p.m. Tuesday.
