Chamber holds its 90th installation

Members said farewell to an outgoing chairman, and hello to the 2014 chairman of the board of directors at the Santa Clarita Valley Chamber of Commerce’s 90th annual installation ceremonies Friday night.

In his final salute to the chamber, outgoing chairman Fred Arnold paid tribute to the people who inspired him in 2013.

Incoming chairman, Jim Backer, reminded attendees of the civic role the chamber has played in the building the region.

The chamber has long played a leadership role in the region. More recently, it worked to help Santa Clarita become a city in 1987 and it formed the first economic development committee which spun off into the SCV Economic Development Corp. in 2010.

“The aim of the chamber is to build up business,” Backer said.

The third largest chamber in Los Angeles County will work with businesses large and small to ensure legislative and business interests are being met, and that smaller businesses benefit from better connections between buyers and sellers, he said in a written statement.

The chairman and board of directors were sworn in by Senator Steve Knight and Assemblyman Scott Wilk.

The chamber also took a moment to honor local businesses: Joie de Vivre Photographie as Small Business of the Year; Chiquita Canyon as Large Business of the Year; and dual winners in the Medium Business of the Year category

– Mission Valley Bank and Persia Restaurant. Business owner Chris Kaub was honored with a Special Achievement award.
