Canyon High girls soccer team members celebrate after Vanessa Quintero, second from left, scored the winning goal on Friday at Canyon High School.

Just when it looked like the Canyon Cowboys and West Ranch Wildcats were headed for a draw on Friday night at Canyon High School, the Cowboys’ Vanessa Quintero changed everything on one strike.

Canyon was awarded a free kick from about 20 yards out with seven minutes left, and Quintero sent a rocket into the back of the net to hand the Cowboys a 1-0 victory.

“There’s not a lot of keepers on any level that are going to stop a shot that’s moving as rapidly as that was,” said Canyon head coach Derek Rusk. “I can’t remember a free kick that looked better.”

The kick came toward the end of an evenly matched game, which was highlighted by defensive play.

Canyon (10-4-2 overall, 2-0 in Foothill League) managed eight shots on goal, while West Ranch took seven.

The Wildcats (8-5-3, 0-2) nearly broke through with about 30 minutes remaining, but Canyon defender Celia Franco found the ball just before it crossed into the goal, clearing it to safety.

“If you look back at what could have been or should have happened you lose focus and we’re not in a spot where we can do that,” said West Ranch head coach Jared White. “We have a same day rule, you think about the game that was played on that day and when you wake up you think about the next game.”

West Ranch will prepare to take on Saugus on Tuesday, which lost 2-0 to Hart on Friday afternoon.

Canyon, on the other hand, gets its first crack at one of the league’s favorite, when it faces Valencia (3-1 winners over Golden Valley on Friday) on Tuesday.

“Coming into the game we still feel like Hart and Valencia may be the top two or two of the top three teams (in league),” Rusk said. “The question is, who is going to join them in the top three? And any one of these teams in the league could join them, or possibly surpass them, and we hope to do that.”
