When most men are rocking by the fire, or just collecting dust, Ed Jace and Thor Jorgensen are on the tennis courts.

And not just for a few quick hits once a week, but for two and three hours, four to five times a week, these gentlemen are out to get exercise and beat the youngsters in tennis.

Members of the Newhall Tennis Club, the gentlemen celebrated their birthdays with the Valencia Glen players on Dec. 31.

Although Ed Jace turned 92 and Thor Jorgensen turned 90 in late December, both were on the courts early that Tuesday to play their favorite game-tennis.

At 9 a.m. all play stopped and JoAnn Jace, Ed’s Daughter-in-law, presented both birthday boys a certificate from Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael Antonovich and from California Assemblyman Scott Wilk.

Afterwards, pictures of all the participants and cakes, pies, power bars, sodas and coffee were served while old friends reminisced with one another – “The older I got, the better I was!”

By the way, one of the ‘youngsters’ – Mitch Mitchell was there and will be celebrating his birthday in early January. Mitch will be only 89!

Everyone had a great time at the annual celebration and look forward to next December for the party to happen again.

Editors Note: Players in the tennis club come from all around the Santa Clarita – Valencia, Saugus, Newhall, Canyon Country, Castaic and even Porter Ranch. Sadly, the Newhall Tennis Club's founder, Gene Doty, just recently passed away in Canyon Country.
