Affordable Care Act: A success story

I am one of those folks who signed up for the Affordable Care Act. It was my first time on the open health care market, since I always had health care provided from employment, either mine or my spouse’s.

I ended up with a non-subsidized Bronze Plan with Blue Shield of California, a PPO provider plan.

Wouldn’t you know it, I got sick right away in the new year and so had to use my plan right away.

I wasn’t sure how this would actually work because of all the hype in the media. I honestly didn’t know what to expect.

I had a list of doctors and — guess what? A doctor I knew and had gone to in a former plan was on my list, so off I went to his office to see if he could help me.

The office was able to take me right away and there was no difference between Affordable Care Act patients and regular patients in the waiting room. Really short wait time on this visit.

It worked great! I saw a great doctor — yes, I needed a simple prescription, paid my co-pay and off to the pharmacy.

This was so simple and so easy, I can’t tell you how happy I was to have it work so effortlessly. Yes, I hope not to get sick often, but I have to say the sky didn’t fall, I was treated as any other patient would be, and now I’m quite happy with my choice.

People who need help in applying for coverage can get all the information they need at a public meeting of Covered California this Saturday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at St. Stephens Episcopal Church, Parish Hall, 24901 Orchard Village Rd. in Valencia.

Representatives from the new health program will be available to answer your questions about this new health care system and to assist you in beginning the enrollment process.

This nonpartisan event is sponsored by the Democratic Alliance for Action. For information, call 661 309-4322.

Take it from a satisfied customer: I wasn’t sure what to expect, but my experience was the best. Please find out for yourself; you’ll be glad you did.
