A baker’s dozen candidates are expected to vie for the three seats open on the Santa Clarita City Council during April’s election, according Wednesday’s filings at Santa Clarita City Hall.

Wednesday was the last day for interested candidates to file paperwork with the Santa Clarita City Clerk’s office to run in the April 8 election.

The original filing deadline for candidates was last Friday, but that was extended three business days after longtime City Councilman Frank Ferry did not file to run for re-election this year.

Two additional candidates emerged during the extended deadline period: Moazzem H. Chowdhury and Sandra Bull.
Bull is a retired educator who unsuccessfully ran for a spot on the Newhall School District board in November.

Chowdhury had told The Signal earlier that he was “90 percent” sure he was going to run and had earlier pulled papers indicating he was interested in running.

The 11 other individuals who have already been confirmed as candidates for the election are former congressional candidate Dante Acosta; Valencia residents Dennis Conn and Stephen Daniels; Canyon Country Advisory Committee Chairman Alan Ferdman; longtime Canyon Country resident Berta Gonzalez-Harper; Newhall County Water District board member Maria Gutzeit; city Parks, Recreation and Community Services Commissioner Duane Harte; incumbent Councilwoman Marsha McLean; William S. Hart Union High School District board member Gloria Mercado-Fortine; incumbent Mayor Laurene Weste; and Paul J. Wieczorek.

Weste, who took over as mayor earlier this year, was first elected to the council in 1998. McLean was first elected in 2002.
Ferry’s decision not to run creates a relative rarity on the City Council, that of an open seat. Ferry was first elected to the council in 1998.

Council members TimBen Boydston and Bob Kellar are not up for election this year.
