An 18-year-old Castaic man hit by a car while skateboarding across The Old Road in Stevenson Ranch has died of his injuries, officials said Wednesday.

Albert Castro of Castaic, a senior at Bowman High School, was hit by a car traveling the speed limit about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, according to a California Highway Patrol collision report released Wednesday.

Castro was riding his skateboard across The Old Road, traveling west to east along the north crosswalk of Valencia Boulevard, when he was hit by a car, CHP investigating Officer Nicholas Teddleton wrote in his report.

The driver of the 2002 Honda, identified as 54-year-old Ranu Junprunh of Saugus, was in the middle lane driving north on The Old Road at the intersection of Valencia Boulevard.

The Honda was traveling about 50 miles per hour, Teddleton said. The speed limit at the location is 50 mph.

“As the Honda was traversing the intersection, Castro traveled in front of the Honda,” the officer wrote in his report. “Subsequently, the front (of the Honda) struck Castro and he was ejected onto the roadway, sustaining major injuries.”

The driver stopped at the scene and contacted emergency services, Teddleton said.

Castro was treated at the scene and taken to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital, where he died of his injuries.

Friends of Castro held an impromptu memorial Wednesday evening at the site of the collision, lighting candles and placing notes and pictures.

“It’s really hard,” Castro’s friend Monica Gildo said of his death. “It’s surreal.”

“We are saddened by the loss of one of our students,” said Gail Pinsker, spokeswoman for the Willliam S. Hart Union High School District. “Our thoughts are with his family and friends and with the Bowman High School family.”

Castro had initially attended West Ranch High School but transferred to Bowman in his junior year.

“He had a beautiful smile that would light up an entire room,” said Gildo, who became friends with Castro about four years ago when he moved to Castaic from Long Beach. “He was always full of life. He was never negative, always positive.”

The fatal crash is the second traffic collision involving a teenaged skateboarder in just over a month.

On Dec. 16, a 16-year-old skateboarder was injured and taken to Henry Mayo after a collision with a car at a busy Canyon Country intersection.

The skateboarder was crossing the westbound lanes of Soledad Canyon Road at Rainbow Glen Drive under the direction of a crossing guard when he was struck by a car shortly after 3 p.m., a local sheriff’s deputy said at the time.
