Hart third-year head coach Terra Palmer was funny and serious at the same time with her response to when the last time the Indians have played like this in a Foothill League game.

“That was before I got here,” said the third-season head coach.

Hart opened up Foothill League play on Tuesday with a 64-45 victory against West Ranch at West Ranch High.

The Indians’ last win against the Wildcats was Feb. 10, 2009.

That was the season where Hart’s slide of five consecutive Foothill losing seasons began.

However, this Hart team has the chance to turn the tide.

The evidence is this game.

In the third quarter, Hart’s top player Breze Kimble and starting wing and varsity veteran Julia White had four fouls.

Another player, Liz Sulaiman, fouled out in the closing moments of the third.

With all that, Hart kept building on a lead it got with the first basket of the third quarter.

The teams were tied 32-32 at halftime with the Wildcats leaning on its star Whitney Branham, who had 23 points by the break.

Hart scored 10 points before West Ranch’s first bucket of the half at 1:40 to play in the third.

West Ranch didn’t score until 3:38 to play in the fourth, as looks got more difficult for Branham.

By then, Hart was running away with it with a 53-39 advantage.

“Our defense was really aggressive (early) and got me going. In the second half, it got away,” Branham said. “We played more timid. They were in foul trouble and we should have pushed the tempo.”

Branham ended the game with 29 points.

For Hart, White scored 16 points, Kimble scored 12, Sophia Jacobsson also scored 12 and Emma Johnson added nine.

Valencia 69, Saugus 47

Valencia and Saugus played tight early on Tuesday, but the Vikings pulled away with a strong third quarter in a 69-47 win.

Sandra Ikeora scored 21 points and had 18 rebounds.

Ashlee Ane added 14, Sabrina Thompson scored 13 and Kayla Konrad scored 12 points, had seven rebounds and added five assists.

Valencia led 34-30, but went on a 23-10 run in the third quarter to pull away.

Saugus’ Mija Williams scored 16 points, four on three-pointers. Brittany Guzman 11 points.

Canyon 55, Golden Valley 33

Delaney McCann led the way for Canyon with 16 points and the Cowboys beat Golden Valley 55-33 on Tuesday.

Teammates Monica Friedl and Kali Vittallo both contributed big nights, with 15 points and 12 points respectively,

“It was really important for us to get off to a good start,” said Canyon head coach Chuck Johns. “Foothill League jitters always kind of sneak up on kids, so it was good to start off well in the first half.”

The Cowboys led 35-13 at halftime.

Grizzlies senior Caitlyn Zindroski led all Golden Valley scorers with 13 points.
