Two Albertsons supermarkets in the Santa Clarita Valley will close next month, company officials announced Tuesday.

The announcement comes on the heels of Ralphs supermarket officials’ notice earlier this month that its market near Lake Hughes Road in Castaic will close.

The Albertsons store in Canyon Country at Sierra Highway and Soledad Canyon Road, as well as the one on The Old Road and Valencia Boulevard uin Stevenson Ranch, will close on or around Feb. 20, said Lilia Rodriguez, spokeswoman for Albertsons.

Two other Santa Clarita Albertsons will remain open — one in Saugus on Bouquet Canyon Road and the other in Valencia on Copper Hill Drive.

Employees were notified of the store closures on Tuesday, Rodriguez said.

Albertsons does not release information about the number of employees who will lose their jobs when a store closes, Rodriguez said. But the company’s human relations teams are “working diligently with the unions to place as many of the employees as possible” in other stores, she said.

Both the Canyon Country and Valencia stores were under-performing, Rodriguez said. Ralphs officials cited the same reason for closing one of its Castaic stores.

Albertsons had put itself up for sale in 2005 and Supervalu acquired the stores in 2006. Since then, a number of ownership and management changes have occurred.

All four of the local stores had been on the chopping block, but survived, in September 2012 when Supervalu Inc. announced 66 of the supermarkets throughout the chain would be closed.

After Supervalu’s ownership a new group was formed, Albertsons LLC, and the stores — through private investment firm Cerberus — were re-acquired in 2013.

“Our company periodically evaluates its operations and the performance of its stores to ensure a stronger overall business,” Rodriguez said. “Making the difficult decision to close these two stores will give us the opportunity to reinvest in our existing store base and build a stronger division.”
