Don't cut necessities

Teacher layoffs should not be the first solution presented by the school board to solve the current financial crisis in the Hart District schools.

The district needs to look at the programs that have been added since the last recession and start cutting there: Early College, Academy of the Canyons, PAR, BTSA, Diversity ... the list goes on. These are all valuable programs during the times that we have resources to add to the regular classroom instructional program.

When we lack the resources to maintain our classroom instructional program, we should cut the extras first. All Hart district staff members know that sacrifices will need to be made, but I am not convinced that the district knows the classroom is not the place to start the cuts.

When my family makes budgeting sacrifices in these tough times, we start cutting the extras, not the necessities.
