Fiddling while climate change damages the Earth

Well, once again the “Sage of Saugus” has managed to hit his head on the nail.

Climate change is a hoax, or a liberal plot, and besides, we’ve been here before and we have survived, says Brian Baker (“Global warming issue is ludicrous,” Dec. 29, 2013, The Signal).

Who is “we”?

How do liberals benefit from this plot? What is the point of the hoax? Were there more than 6 billion people on the planet the last time “we” survived?

He would have us continue to argue about the cause of increasing planetary temperature while the effects of that change play out before our eyes.

Nineth-five percent of earth scientists conclude that the climate is getting warmer. Not biologists, ethicists, attorneys, or doctors of divinity.

It’s not prudent to bet everything on a 20-to-1 shot. Some South Pacific islands are already sinking beneath rising tides.

Polar ice is shrinking. Glaciers are receding. The bulk of the hottest years on record are in the last two decades. We can no longer just dance to the “grasshoppers’ fiddle”!

What, if anything, are we doing to mitigate the negative effects? Global populations continue to grow. Some 35 percent of those people live within 100 miles of a coast.

Bangladesh, Asia’s largest rice-growing area, is mostly 10 feet or less above sea level. Rice doesn’t grow in brackish water. Rising salt water means less rice.

Additionally, where will the people displaced by the rising water relocate? Where will they find food and water?
Locally, how many more years of drought can we endure before water rationing is required? What about water for agriculture?

Can we really continue to build on prime agricultural land and still grow enough food?

Baker says, “Don’t worry, be happy.” It will all go away.

I think it’s a bad bet!
