SANTA CLARITA - A car and a bicyclist collided in a crosswalk on Valencia’s Auto Row at dusk Friday; the bicyclist was taken by ambulance to the hospital.

The driver of the car that collided with the cyclist, William S. Hart Union High School District board member Joe Messina, said the bicyclist, who was not identified, crossed on his bike in front of his car without looking.

Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station personnel were investigating the crash.

It occurred on westbound Creekside Road in front of the GMC dealership shortly before 5 p.m. Messina said he was driving to the Valencia Post Office and had slowed for a car turning right in front of him when the cyclist, wearing earbuds and a backpack, crossed unexpectedly from the north to the south side of the street in one of Creekside’s “bulb-out” crosswalks.

Messina estimated he was driving 20 mph.

Sheriff’s Department Detective Dan Finn said the cyclist was not wearing a helmet.

The bicyclist, who appeared to be in his mid-20s, was bleeding from the head but was conscious as ambulance attendants loaded him onto a gurney and took him with lights flashing and siren blaring.

His bicycle was left propped against a lamppost in front of the auto dealership.

Creekside was shut to traffic for more than an hour as investigators worked at the scene.
