Twenty-one volunteers, many of whom are retired from various professions, turned out this week for the first class to train as a docent for the Placerita Canyon Nature Center and Natural Area.

The docents-to-be will train for nine weeks on nature topics like ecology, birds, plants, camp ground history, and trail interpretation techniques before they qualify as tour guides for visitors.

The nature center in Newhall sees about 10,000 students a year from all over Los Angeles County.
