Character counts

A profitable dividend that makes good sense is teaching our kids to be financially responsible, and to integrate character traits such as integrity and responsibility in their daily lifestyle.

Perhaps some major companies in our country need to send their employees, and CEOs, to some schools in the Santa Clarita Valley, where character counts.

Hats off to the many schools in the SCV that have adopted the Character Counts program.

Our city has been and continues to provide schools and business with training from the Character Counts program developed by the Michael Josephson Institute.

Perhaps in the future, we should have a course entitled "Mini-Money Managers," where students aren't taught only math facts and skills but also responsible ways to spend and save. Does "money grow on trees?" Perhaps it grows at the push of a button at the ATM, or as evidenced in a bailout.

What model does this provide our youth? Where's the idea of the work ethic and responsibility for your own behavior?

Are there still consequences for overspending, unwise decision-making and unethical practices? We need to recognize and salute honorable ethical practices instead of highlighting the negative in the news.

It's been my experience, being in the school system a very long time, that the students who are rewarded at assemblies for respect, responsibility, caring, fairness, citizenship and trustworthiness (the six pillars of character) are more likely to apply these to other areas of their lives, such as sports, jobs and community service.

Although academics and computer literacy are valuable tools for job seekers, the ability to cooperate with others on the job, be honest and have compassion for fellow citizens is equally important, if not more profitable in the long run. Let's continue to invest in our kids' character at home and at school.
