The men’s and women’s basketball teams from The Master’s College were back in action this past week, closing out 2013 and welcoming in a new year by extended winning streaks.

Playing in the Embassy Suites Classic at Arizona Christian University on Dec. 30-31, the men’s team ran its winning streak to eight games by beating Mt. Marty of South Dakota and Menlo College.

In the opener, the Mustangs showed little rust from a 16-day layoff, using a game-changing, 24-5 first-half run and five 3-pointers from redshirt freshman Reid Shackelford to whip the Lancers 67-46.

A day later, the Mustangs celebrated New Year’s Eve in prolific fashion, putting together a trio of first-half bursts to run away from Menlo 72-46. TMC beat the Oaks for the second time in a month and improved to 11-2. Junior transfer Zach Stalin’s 14 points paced a balanced attack that featured seven players who registered at least six points.

In a quirk on their 2013-14 schedule, the Mustangs closed out the week with an exhibition Saturday afternoon at UC Santa Barbara where the NCAA Division I Gauchos, playing the game as a regular-season one on their slate, defeated the visitors 81-52.

Returning to regular-season action this Tuesday, the Mustangs will put their eight-game winning streak on the line at No. 8 Cal State San Marcos.

Meanwhile, the Lady Mustangs welcomed in the 2014 portion of their schedule by scoring the game’s first 12 points in an 89-60 blitzing of Cal State San Marcos Saturday evening on Bross Court.

The sixth win in a row for the 12th-ranked Mustangs improved their record to 11-3, highlighted by a glittering 8-1 mark at home.

Senior All-American Jacquelyn Marshall recorded her fourth consecutive double-double and seventh of the season, tossing in 15 points while snaring a game-high 10 rebounds.

The Mustangs complete a six-game homestand this Thursday evening when they seek to extend their winning streak against La Sierra in a 7 p.m. start on Bross Court.
