A 19-year-old man stopped for jaywalking who asked the sheriff’s deputy for a ride ended up being charged with possessing metal knuckles, according to a sheriff’s report filed at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

On Friday, shortly after 3:45 p.m., a man was spotted by a patrol deputy crossing Sand Canyon Road “after passing a clearly marked crosswalk,” the deputy reported.

“I pulled up next to the suspect in my marked police car and before I could say anything to him, he quickly asked me if I could give him a ride to Sierra Highway,” he wrote.

“He said his car had just been impounded and he was trying to get home. I told him I could give him a ride but I said I needed to make sure he wasn’t carrying any weapons before I put him in my car,” the deputy wrote.

“The suspect consented to the search and said ‘if you’re going to search me you should know I have something on me and it’s very illegal.’ I asked the suspect what he had and he said he was carrying a pair of metal knuckles.

“I asked the suspect why he had the knuckles and he said he was carrying them for a friend. He said he didn’t want his friend to get into trouble and thought he could dispose of them for him.

“I asked the suspect how long he had been ‘holding’ the knuckles for his friend prior to our contact, and he said he has had them for at least a week. I asked him why he hadn’t been able to dispose of the knuckles during that time.

“He said ‘I needed to find the right place because I didn’t want a kid to find them and hurt someone.’”

The young man was booked into custody and charged on the suspicion he possessed metal knuckles.
