Take the Polar Plunge on New Year's Day

If you’re looking for a New Year’s Day activity in keeping with your fitness resolution, the Santa Clarita Aquatic Center invites you to take the plunge there.

The 8th annual Arctic Chill Polar Bear Swim is scheduled at the water slide pool in the complex, and in the interests of authenticity the pool will not be heated, Aquatic Supervisor Lance O’Keefe promises.

The water temperature Monday morning was 45 degrees.

True, not exactly the icy temperatures that will greet those who take polar bear plunges or swims elsewhere around the country. In Wisconsin, for example, polar bear plunge organizers are warning participants that air temperatures will be in the single digits this year and water will be caked with ice.

Still, 45 degrees is respectable for sunny Southern California, O’Keefe said. And he’s noticed something else: The sunnier and warmer the daytime temperatures, the more Santa Clarita Valley polar bear wanna-bes turn out for the New Year’s Day ritual.

Residents can take the plunge at 9 a.m. Wednesday, and afterward they can thaw out beneath a pool-side heater with coffee, hot chocolate, tea and refreshments.

The Santa Clarita Aquatic Center is at 20850 Centre Pointe Parkway, and no reservations are required to participate.
