Former Signal publisher named executive of the year

SANTA CLARITA - Former Signal publisher William H. Fleet has been named Newspaper Executive of the Year by the California Newspaper Publishers Association.

Fleet was publisher of The Signal from 1993 to 2001 when the business experienced strong growth and introduced several new products. He also founded the Santa Clarita Valley Press Club and the Newsmakers of the Year awards and was very active in the community. In 2007 he received the Ruth Newhall Lifetime Achievement Award.

Fleet went on to become publisher of the Santa Barbara News-Press, the Fresno Bee, and was responsible for the operations of the Los Angeles Times-owned community newspapers from 2004 to 2006.

Fleet currently is co-owner and co-publisher of three community newspapers in Northern California.
