SANTA CLARITA - More than half a dozen local high school marching band musicians will be proudly marching in the 2014 Rose Parade on Wednesday, having been chosen for the Tournament of Roses Honor Band

Most of those hand-picked to participate in one of America’s biggest and most respected traditions are from Saugus High School, with one student each representing William S. Hart, West Ranch and Canyon high schools.

One of those chosen was trumpeter Hunter Seyforth, a junior at Saugus High School.

“I was quite shocked. I couldn’t believe it,” Seyforth told The Signal Monday afternoon after a full day of practicing with the band in Pasadena.

“I was overwhelmed with excitement,” he said.

And when he learned he had been picked to play trumpet in the band’s front “herald” line, he said: “It was unbelievable.”

The chosen students have been practicing every day since Dec. 26.

“He was so thrilled when he found out,” said Seyforth’s mother, Jennifer Seyforth. “A friend of his phoned to congratulate him — that’s how he found out.”

“He auditioned for the honor band and found out a few days later,” she said.

Seyforth had also auditioned last year but failed to make the cut. This year he was tapped not only to join the Tournament of Roses Honor Band and also to march ahead of the tournament “queen” float in the Herald squad.

“He’ll be right out front with the queen and her court,” his mother said.
