SANTA CLARITA - Three men were arrested during the weekend for attempting to smuggle drugs and drug paraphernalia into Pitchess Detention Center in Castaic.

The trio was arrested Sunday morning and booked at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station on charges of bringing drugs and drug paraphernalia to a jail, a felony, the sheriff’s daily arrest log shows.

The 23-year-old factory worker from Compton, 30-year-old dispatcher from Arleta and 32-year-old landscaper, also from Arleta, join a long list of people charged with the crime during 2013, records indicate.

Most notable among the prior cases was that of a man arrested Sept. 30 after more than a dozen years cleaning shirts for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Juan Ortiz, 55, identified as a civilian laundry supervisor at the Pitchess Detention Center’s South Facility and a 13-year employee, was arrested and charged with bringing narcotics into a jail facility, a felony.

Arrested by the Internal Criminal Investigations Bureau, Ortiz resigned from the department right after he was booked.

Stephen Beecher, a 61-year-old Los Angeles attorney, was arrested on a warrant charging him with two counts of conspiracy to commit a crime, one felony count of bringing drugs into jail, one felony count of transportation of a controlled substance and one felony count of bringing a firearm into a jail.

Other individuals charged with bringing drugs into the jail have included a Los Angeles hair stylist arrested last month and a Palmdale security guard arrested in July.
