An open letter to the city of Santa Clarita

Recently, The Signal published an article about an online petition with 800 signatures from the U.S., Argentina, Croatia, Kazakhstan, Poland and more to rename Hercules Street in Valencia to “Walker/Rodas Memorial Way.”

Should this matter formally come before the City Council please assert wisdom and summarily dismiss the issue.

By all accounts Walker and Rodas were good individuals. However, they were adult men with an adolescent need-for-speed and the ability to acquire big, expensive toys. In the end, they died by what they lived and promoted.

Due to the high-performance, speed-related car crash that killed both, our community hosted obscene numbers of curiosity seekers and endured massive inconveniences with some local businesses suffering a lull in patronage that translated to loss of revenue.

Newspapers carried coverage, sometime two articles each per day ad nauseum.

The site’s visits had an air of the macabre with the promotion of Universal Pictures (the “Fast & Furious” movies) who lost a cash cow and the ghouls digging through charred rubble to get a mere burnt piece of a car that once was.

For two young, talented and accomplished men to lose their lives is a sad event, but there was a cause. Sheriff’s

Department investigators have reported speed was a cause of the crash. The victims’ choices.

With sadness, many people mourned in our Santa Clarita Valley for Paul Walker and Roger Rodas. With ecstatic glee what we did not do was have to mourn any innocent victim(s) of that same crash.

By the grace of God, no other person or family was walking or driving on Hercules Street when that souped-up ball of fire erratically flew into a tree and a pole.
