SANTA CLARITA - Walt Disney Imagineering, the design and development arm of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, has selected a California Institute of the Arts team as one of six finalist for its “imaginations design competition.”

Each of the six teams will present its final project to Walt Disney Imagineering executives in Glendale between Jan. 27-31 and take part in an awards ceremony Jan. 31.

The teams — from Carnegie Mellon University, San Diego State University, Savannah College of Art & Design, the University of California Los Angeles and University of Pennsylvania, as well as CalArts in Valencia — were given the challenge of selecting a large and densely populated urban area and designing an experience that temporarily or permanently transforms the city for the enjoyment of its citizens and visitors.

“A panel of Imagineering judges applies the same criteria to the entries as they would to their own work,” according to a news release from Imagineering. Among the qualities looked for are the team’s ability to collaborate across different disciplines and backgrounds; the mastery of team members’ individual skills; whether the project provides an engaging guest experience; a good understanding of the local and tourist market in the chosen location; the ability to tell a compelling and engaging story; and knowledge and passion for the Disney brand and Walt Disney Imagineering.

The teams that place top three in the competition will receive a $3,000 award each. The first-place team will get an additional $1,000 grant to be divided among its sponsor universities and organizations.

Finalists will also have a chance to interview for paid internships during the visit to Imagineering headquarters in Glendale.
