Practice what you preach, City Council

I found Mayor Laurene Weste’s five-column lecture and admonishment published Dec. 13 in The Signal (“‘Tis the season to shop in Santa Clarita”) interesting for those of us who live in Santa Clarita.

Just a day or two earlier, a small item noted that the Santa Clarita City Council had given the contract to rehabilitate the Old Newhall Library to a company in Whittier.

Oh yes, and how proud she was to note that nearly 35 percent of contracts are awarded to local businesses — which means nearly two-thirds go to outside vendors.

And wow! A huge “$289,000 went locally to other goods and services” — is that 1 percent, 5 percent or 10 percent of the total budget?

When will the mayor and City Council decide to practice what they preach — especially when she states “...dollars spent in locally owned stores have three times the impact on the local economy.”
