SANTA CLARITA - A well-loved and highly respected local fire captain who died of cancer this month was honored Wednesday at a memorial service followed by a funeral procession across the Santa Clarita Valley.

John David Mazzocco, who grew up in the Santa Clarita Valley to become captain of two local fire stations, died Dec. 12 after a long illness. He was 48.

More than 400 firefighters turned out at Grace Baptist Church on Wednesday for a service in his honor.

A funeral procession followed from Grace Baptist in Valencia to Eternal Valley Memorial Park & Mortuary in Newhall. Traffic was stopped at intersections along the route.

The procession made its way past fire stations 111 in Saugus and 73 in Newhall; Mazzocco served as captain at both.

Mazzocco attended Newhall Elementary School, Placerita Junior High School and graduated from Hart High School in 1983. He played four years of baseball and football at Hart before attending Piece College, where he continued football while pursuing a career in the fire service.

Mazzocco, son of retired Battalion Chief Bob Mazzocco, began his firefighting career in 1986 with the Los Angeles County Fire Department. He and his wife, Lori, married in 1991 and have two sons, Matthew, 20, and Michael 18.

“He was the nicest guy you’d ever meet,” Fire Department Battalion Chief Mark Savage told The Signal. “He was everything you’d ever want to have in someone you worked with and called a friend.”
