The city of Santa Clarita will host its new skate park's public Grand Opening on Friday at 3:30 p.m., but 30 local kids will get to surf the concrete turf early.

Nearly 200 young people from elementary, high school and middle schools across the city applied for's VIP contest to skate the new Santa Clarita Skate Park early.

After careful consideration, 30 lucky city kids have been chosen to attend the private VIP Pre-Grand Opening on Thursday at 4 p.m.

To be eligible to receive the VIP pass, local skaters logged on to and submitted their ideas for what should be included in the new skate park's code of conduct and why. The applicants with the winning suggestions were selected to enjoy an hour at the park before it opens.

"The contest raised youth awareness of and rewarded Santa Clarita kids for providing their input on city policies," Mayor ("Dude") Frank Ferry said. "Since these 30 kids cared enough about the skate park to get involved and help set its code of conduct, it's great to give them a sneak peek."

The new, 40,000 square foot skate park features a capsule riding surface, 10- and 11-foot bowls, grind ledges, a half-pipe, snake run, stairs, skate-able planters, rails and more.

After extensive collaboration among city staff, local boarders and seasoned skaters, the new Santa Clarita Skate Park will open to the public on March 27 at 3:30 with vendors, pro skaters, free food, music and more.
