Golden Valley football just pressed reset on its football program.

The Canyon Country high school hired Andy Campbell, formerly of Silver Valley High in Yermo, to be its third head coach in school history on Friday.

Golden Valley football, a program marred by losses, ineligibility, and lack of participation since its varsity debut in 2005, hopes Campbell is the solution to the team’s lack of success.

“His track record of being able to take programs and turn them in the right direct we feel is a perfect fit for us,” said the school’s athletic director Chris Printz. “He’s a commanding personality, he’s extremely energetic and has a great knowledge of Xs and Os. Of all the great candidates, we felt he was by far the right fit for us.”

Golden Valley is 7-33 in four varsity seasons.

Steve Pinkston, the school’s second varsity head football coach, resigned Dec. 11 after his 2008 squad went 3-7.

Pinkston was 5-25 and 0-15 in the Foothill League.

The closest the Grizzlies have played a Foothill league opponent was a Nov. 9, 2007 42-21 loss to West Ranch.

Silver Valley had a 5-25 stretch between 2004 and 2006 before Campbell took over prior to the 2007 season.

His teams went 4-6 and 7-5 in 2007 and 2008 respectively.

Campbell was hired by Golden Valley as a walk-on coach.

Golden valley went through two rounds of interviews and Printz said Campbell was the most impressive both times.

“We want to make sure we have a football program that will continue to earn the respect and pride of the students,” Printz said of the importance of finding the right guy for the job. “One of the biggest factors in hiring a football coach was to have somebody who has a dynamic personality. In one meeting already, he has the interest level already high.”

A call to Campbell seeking comment was not returned Tuesday night.
