Low welfare fraud numbers have nothing to do with politics

I have never written or responded to a letter to the editor until now, but I cannot let Carole Lutness’s “Republicans go after the poor” (Dec. 9) go without a response.

I worked for the county of Los Angeles for 25 years, with at least 20 of those for the Welfare Office.

For Carole’s information, there is a lot of fraud that goes on, not just by “brown- and black-skinned people,” as she like to put it, but also by all ethnic groups.

The trouble is there are not enough welfare fraud investigators to handle it all. If there were, and they could go after these people, the county could save thousands of thousands of dollars.

So before you start screaming the race card, I would get my facts straight.
