Jose Cruz’s funeral is scheduled for today at 9 a.m. at the San Fernando Mission, according to a Canyon High School official.

Cruz’s body was found Thursday inside a residence in the 29000 block of Marilyn Street in Canyon Country. He graduated from Canyon in 2008.

“We had a lot of kids grieving,” Canyon High Principal Bob Messina said Friday.

Messina remembered Cruz as a “fun-loving” student who played basketball and track and had a large group of friends.

The Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office will await a toxicology report before determining the cause of death for the 18-year-old Canyon High School graduate who was found dead in his home, a spokesman said Friday.

It will take eight to 12 weeks to determine the cause of Cruz’s death, said Lt. Joe Bale of the Corner’s Office.

Cruz is the second student at Canyon High to die in less than a week.

Nicholas Wayne Pruett, a Canyon High School freshman died suddenly while jogging in a park March 17.
