Beware misuse of the word “period”

Charlie Vignola opens his column Dec. 3 by writing: “Simply put, what I believe shouldn’t affect you, and what you believe shouldn’t affect me — period” (“Slippery slope for U.S.”).

There’s one of those “Period” things again, used as an exclamatory. Reminds me of Obama.

The problem here for Vignola is that, just like when Obama used the word, he doesn’t really mean it because Vignola spends the whole column rationalizing how he does, in fact, want his own views to “affect” everyone else, and how

Obamacare should be forced down the throats of everyone in the country, even those with legitimate religious objections to it.

In a more general sense, this is one of the major problems with American socialism: it requires that basic and essential liberties be ignored or violated in order for it to be implemented.

Obamacare is not only an imposition on religious liberty; it’s a back-door violation of basic property rights, since at its heart it is essentially a wealth-redistribution scheme.

But maybe the real “teachable moment” here is that whenever we hear a Dem/socialist use the word “Period” to underscore what he’s claiming, we should all go on high alert.
