Commanding others via government

By analogy with the gay marriage issue, who cares if someone who’s never been to Paris wants to privately call themselves a “Parisian”?

The well-meaning liberal would hold that it gives them greater dignity, and the well-meaning conservative would say “live and let live.”

But the liberal would go further, saying that everyone else must call them “Parisian” to preserve “Parisian equality” (except oddly, not for “Parisian” polygamists, “Parisian” siblings, etc.).

Moreover, the liberal would then impose a penalty of fine/imprisonment so that everyone must treat this new

“Parisian” as though he had gone to Paris — forcibly redefining the meaning of the word.

And that, it would appear, is the crucial difference; at the very core, the modern liberal always seeks to command others via the government, and the gay marriage issue is no different.
