The Master’s College women’s volleyball team knocked off fourth-ranked and previously undefeated Madonna University of Michigan in the second round of the NAIA National Championship tournament in Sioux City, Iowa on Wednesday.

TMC won 3-1 (25-16, 23-25, 25-19, 26-24).

With the victory, the 16th-ranked Lady Mustangs (22-8) have won their pool with a game left and have qualified for single-elimination play in the tournament.

Sam Dougherty led the way with 23 kills and 19 digs.

Ashley Newton added 13 kills. Aubrey Bekendam had 49 assists. Rebecca Peluffo had 29 digs.

In the first set, TMC jumped on the Crusaders 6-0 and never trailed, at one point building an 11-point advantage.

The Mustangs led 23-19 in the second set before allowing the next six points to drop that one.

After a tight start in set 3, TMC scored nine straight points to go up 16-9 and later close Madonna (39-1) out.

The fourth started similarly before the Lady Mustangs went on an early run, which was countered by a late run by Madonna.

An attack error by Crusader Emilie Freeman gave the Mustangs the match.

TMC plays 25th-ranked Rocky Mountain College (25-8) today.
