The Master’s College women’s volleyball team needed all five sets to get past MidAmerica Nazarene University of Kansas on Tuesday in the opening round of the NAIA National tournament in Sioux City, Iowa.

TMC won 3-2 (25-18, 20-25, 21-25, 25-20, 15-9) with Sam Dougherty’s 25 kills and 13 digs leading the way.

After winning the first set, the TMC Mustangs (21-8) dropped the next two to fall behind 2-1. In need of a rally, the Mustangs rallied back.

Ashley Newton added 14 kills and 10 digs for TMC and Allison Child chipped in 12 more kills.

Aubrey Beckendam tallied 59 assists.

As a team, NAIA No. 16 TMC hit at an impressive .395 clip against Nazarene (26-3), ranked eighth in the nation.

The win means the Mustangs have already matched their school record for NAIA tournament wins, which was set a year ago.

Last season, TMC made its first appearance in school history in the tournament, eventually going 1-2 in pool play before advancing to the single-elimination portion.

The Mustangs lost in the first round of single-elimination play.

TMC will resume pool play today against Madonna University of Michigan and will conclude on Thursday with a matchup against Rocky Mountain College of Montana.
