As we go about our lives here in the beautiful Santa Clarita Valley we sometimes take for granted, or even forget altogether, that there are young people achieving their goals and growing into gifted performers right before our very eyes.

Under the tutelage of band director Robert Gibson, the Saugus High School Marching Band and Color Guard has turned out several students who will be performing on an international stage with close to 700,000 people in attendance and another seventy million watching around the world via television and the Internet.

We would like to congratulate the Saugus students who auditioned for this honor and who will be performing in the 2014 Tournament of Roses parade.  Our congratulations go out to these exceptional students: Brian Kuhn, Evan Hildebrand, Hunter Seyforth, Joe Youngbauer and Sam Tazartes.

They are now members of the Tournament of Roses Honor Band.  This is a coveted position as those who are selected are considered to be the best student musicians in California.

Nine of the best trumpet players and the best snare drummer are selected as the Herald Trumpets. The Herald Trumpet section is the special musical honor group selected from hundreds of candidates who auditioned for this prestigious position.  They will march directly before the Rose Queen’s float and play fanfares.

Sam Tazartes and Joe Youngbauer will both be playing trumpet in the honor band.  Hunter Seyforth and Brian Kuhn were chosen to perform as members of the Herald Trumpet section and will be joined by Evan Hildebrand who will be playing solo snare drum.

This is the 25th consecutive year that a Saugus band or Color Guard member has been chosen to participate in the Tournament of Roses Honor Band and Color Guard.  Congratulations again to Brian, Evan, Hunter, Joe, and Sam.
