Despite a stellar regular season and the team’s first Western State Conference, South Division championship in 13 years, College of the Canyons women’s volleyball still didn’t get to play a home game in the first round of the playoffs.

None of that seems to matter to this COC team, which beat Cypress College 3-1 by set scores of 13-25, 25-22, 25-15, 25-17 on Tuesday night at Cypress in the opening round of the California Community College Athletic Association Southern California playoffs.

“We don’t mind,” said COC head coach Lisa Hooper. “We kind of like being the upset team.”

Serena LeDuff and Lauren Underwood each dropped in 18 kills to lead COC (22-3), which came into the playoff bracket as the No. 10 seed going up against seventh-seeded Cypress (16-9).

After Cypress caught COC off guard in the first set of the evening, the momentum shifted to the away team.

“They were big — very tall and pretty powerful — so we had to make some adjustments and I think we had to get ourselves prepared mentally for the game we’re about to play,” Hooper said.

COC setter Jordan Carter distributed the ball well to the outside hitters as she tallied 45 assists.

“We were savvy in terms of set selection,” Hooper said. “I think Jordan Carter made some really good decisions tonight.”

Cassidy Fitzpatrick had 22 digs for Canyons.

In the second round, COC will face No. 2 seed Grossmont College (26-3) in La Mesa on Saturday at 6 p.m.
