Santa Clarita Valley sheriff’s detectives investigating a crash in Valencia that claimed the life of a 72-year-old man were trying to notify his family about the fatality today, a detective said.

About 6:10 p.m. Wednesday, deputies received reports of a pedestrian struck by a minivan on Wiley Canyon Road just east of Orchard Village Road, Detective Travis Kelly said Thursday.

“The guy shouldn’t have been crossing where he was,” he said. There was no crosswalk at the location, which was east of the intersection.

“He had already crossed the No. 2 (curb) lane and was trying to cross all the lanes” when he was hit in the No. 1 lane, Kelly said.

“We haven’t reached his family yet,” Kelly said. The man’s identity was not released, but his age was put at 72 years old.

Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash. “It just seems to be a pure accident,” he said.

“The pedestrian was transported to a local area hospital where he was pronounced dead,” Kelly wrote in a news release issued Thursday.

The man’s body is expected to be transferred this afternoon to the coroner’s office once his family has been notified.

Administrators working late at the Newhall School District office located on the west side of the intersection said they saw a white minivan near the crash roped off with sheriff’s tape.

Administrators at both the district office and the nearby Pinecrest School said there have been many traffic collisions at the intersection.

Anyone witnessing the incident is asked to contact Detective Jeffery Maag at (661) 255-1121.
