A Caltrans worker was injured and taken to the hospital Wednesday following a two-truck collision on Interstate 5 just south of the Highway 126 overpass, fire and law enforcement officials said.

The collision occurred about 12:10 p.m. in the northbound lanes of the interstate near the California Highway Patrol weigh station scales, said CHP Officer J. Bledsoe.

“It came about as a result of a lane change,” he said. “The Caltrans driver was trapped in his vehicle and had to be extricated.

“He was taken to the hospital with injuries that appeared to be minor,” Bledsoe said.

Los Angeles County firefighters used hydraulic sheers to cut through the metal of the truck to free the driver, a Fire Department spokeswoman said.

Paramedics examined the drivers of both trucks at the crash but transported only one to the hospital, she said.

The crash and subsequent rescue efforts near the center divider reduced traffic to one lane for more than 30 minutes while firefighters worked to free the injured driver.
